VINCE - MELROSE

WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA

DETAILS +

This retail location was only the second brick and mortar store for luxury clothing brand, Vince, and considered their flagship store. Located on Melrose Place, an small but exclusive retail corridor for luxury brands such as Oscar de la Renta and Bottega Veneta, this project aimed to create a design that reflected Vince's emerging identity as an upscale and minimalist retailer.

The store is housed in a petite bungalow built in 1948. The existing concrete floors were exposed and polished and, at the ceiling, the existing douglas fir framing was exposed, creating a dramatic linear lightwell centered over the lower portion of the store and a vaulted ceiling at the upper area.

Capitalizing on existing conditions, an odd, narrow and unusable outdoor alley that jutted into the rear portion was converted into a bamboo garden lined with steel windows, and a second bamboo garden was carved opposite that, creating a "lounge" lit by moody, reflected light.

A bar of seamless, custom walnut millwork is situated below the new skylight, and another serves as the check-out desk at the rear. Grey plaster walls are lined with backlit panels in front of which merchandise hangs from custom floor-mounted racks.

Outside, the original facade of the bungalow was maintained but dramatized with the creation of deeply-recessed windows, recessed planters and custom steel light fixtures.
