1543 7TH STREET
SANTA MONICA, CA
DETAILS +
Inspired by the geographic strata found in the carved away walls of cliffs and quarries, this project is conceived as a series of stacked, horizontal layers slowly stepping back from the street as they move upward. Each layer is composed of different yet harmonious patterns of recessed balconies clad in deepening shades of white and grey plaster.
At the street level, the retail storefronts are tucked below the building above, creating a deeply-shaded and landscaped dining courtyard. Above, the stepped design allows for roof decks at multiple floors, including three separate decks at the roof, interconnected by a boardwalk, and offering views of the Pacific at the rear and the San Gabriel Mountains at the front.
